The subcompact SUV class is a relatively new one, but it’s one that has quickly found its niche – offering economic capability and tech to people who want the benefits of an SUV that fits similar confines as a subcompact hatchback. For Kia, the Kia Soul and Kia Niro have filled out this space nicely. The arrival of the 2021 Kia Seltos, however, puts Kia on the map for a small SUV that is all-wheel-drive equipped and ready to combine the best features of the smaller Kia Soul and larger Kia Sportage.
Today, we’re matching up the forthcoming SUV to the 2020 Toyota C-HR. Toyota’s subcompact crossover aims for a similar character as the Kia Seltos. Although it’s been on the market for a few years and has had some time to acclimate to the wants and needs of its demographics, can it beat the Seltos? Let’s find out.

We have to hand it to Toyota. Unlike many manufacturers, they’ve actually worked hard to provide an enjoyable interior experience for drivers who choose the small C-HR. After all, the C-HR matches the infotainment of the 2021 Kia Seltos, which is something we haven’t seen any other brand do so far in our short time knowing about the amenities on the Kia Seltos.
Still, the 2020 Toyota C-HR falls far short of the value, comfort and convenience that is abundant in the upcoming 2021 Kia Seltos.
For drivers and passengers alike, having over 6 inches of additional legroom in the back means fewer knees in the small of the driver’s back and more room for people to join up on adventures. Speaking of adventures, standard all-wheel drive means you get to take your Seltos places the 2020 Toyota C-HR just can’t go.
With nearly double the amount of cargo volume when compared to the 2020 Toyota C-HR, the Kia Seltos also makes the perfect vehicle for transporting and weekend warrior expeditions.
Finally, Kia has given us an SUV that already fits in with its award-wining lineup thanks to the warranty coverage that adds 5 years or 40,000 miles of confidence to the engine/powertrain and 2 years or 24,000 miles of confidence to the rest of the components.
