In the short list of Kia comparisons, you probably never thought you’d see, BMW has to be one of the manufacturers that’s up there. With Kia’s former image being one of solely value, it’s not hard to see how BMW’s excessive focus on driver engagement at the cost of value and long-term reliability could be interpreted as an opposite approach to automotion, in fact. For Kia, however, the last ten years have been good ones that have seen the brand rise to become challengers courtesy of important acquisitions like Peter Schreyer from Audi and Albert Biermann from the BMW M Division.
These days, Kia vehicles like the Sorento SUV have surprising style, performance and amentities that would make them luxury vehicles by most definitions. Today, we’re comparing the midsize, third-row SUV Sorento to BMW’s midsize SUV, the X5.

Head to head, it appears that the 2019 Kia Sorento does more than just match the 2019 BMW X5’s focus on driving and luxury. In many cases, it’s able to provide a better and more practical ride than the X5.
As Kia fans, we’re pretty biased, but you’d never catch us saying that the Kia Sorento is a better driver’s vehicle than the 2019 BMW X5. After all, the X5 offers an additional 45 horsepower in its base trim over the Sorento’s base V6. However, at more than $25,000 over the price of the X5, the Kia Sorento offers enough power and pep to offer a luxury experience while also letting you put a down payment on a beachfront condo.
As far as functionality is concerned, it’s the Kia Sorento that comes out ahead. With the 2019 Kia Sorento, you have more cargo room, a more comfortable interior for passengers and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto integration that belongs to you – unlike in the BMW X5 where it costs a monthly subscription.
Is the Kia Sorento a luxury performance SUV? No. Is it most of the way there for half the price? Absolutely, and with Kia’s industry-best 10-year/100,000-mile warranty, you’ll be able to count on it for years.
