When it comes to crossover SUVs, consumers have plenty of choices. There are the “old reliables” – those cars that offer very little personality, but can be counted on to get you from A-B. Drivers also sometimes choose the “sexy wild cards.” These vehicles are sharp, heavy on design, but often leave much to be desired for performance (and can leave you stranded by the side of the road). Finally, there are a few “best friends.” Best friends are vehicles that have reliability and plenty of standard features but also bring something new to the table – personality.
Within the realm of best friends, two manufacturers have risen to the top of the list – Kia and Subaru. The first, prized for their unconventional design and focus on increasing driver expectations, and the second, for their single-minded commitment to providing better experiences on multiple terrain types in all-weather. Today, we’re looking at the small crossovers from each – the 2018 Kia Sportage and the 2018 Subaru Forester.

The 2018 Kia Sportage is built for all-around performance and comfort. The advantages to the Kia Sportage are present in the form of its versatility. In the 2018 Subaru Forester, Subaru has built a compelling choice for off-road and all-weather performance, the 2018 Kia Sportage sees every day as an opportunity to impress.
Drivers who choose the Sportage are left with a crossover SUV that offers better technology, a smoother ride, more passing power on the freeway and a distinctive styling that doesn’t blend into the fray.
Both vehicles are available with turbocharged engines, for the Sportage, the top trim level SX Turbo slightly edges the 2018 Subaru Forester 2.0XT CVT Touring by 2 lb-ft. of torque. The Forester doesn’t trail the Sportage in every stat, however. Subaru decided they were sick of winding up with lower numbers on the spec sheet and so they inflated the MSRP to overtake the Sportage’s.
The top trim level Forester comes in at $33,675 MSRP, while the similarly-spec’d SX Turbo Sportage saves some money at $31,043 – a difference of over $2500.
