Direct Current 6: 6 Weeks to Stanley Cup Glory

Tampa Bay Lightning News February 21, 2018

We’re between six and seven weeks from the beginning of the Stanley Cup Playoffs and things are getting a lot sweatier at the top. At the time of this blog post’s publication, the Tampa Bay Lightning are still sitting on top of the NHL for points scored, wins, goals scored and goal difference.

That’s only part of the story, however, as Boston has recently been surging and is within a point of the Bolts with two games in hand on them. Across the continental divide, Nashville’s win streak has propelled them to the top of the Central Division, while Las Vegas’ loss keeps them below us by only one point.

Things are heating up in a way that we couldn’t have predicted 6 weeks ago. Which makes us wonder how much more insane this season is going to get as we now look 6 weeks ahead to the Stanley Cup Playoffs – a tournament in which the Bolts will undoubtedly play a huge part.

For that reason, we’d like to go ahead and highlight some stories that are giving us life this week and keeping us from becoming overburdened by the anxiety of uncertainty that the NHL has delivered to us first-class, same-day delivery mail as of late.

Kucherov Does it to Holtby Again

I’m sure clever sports journalists have already beaten us to the punch but in yesterday’s match against the Washington Capitals, Nikita Kucherov proved that Lightning can strike twice by scoring the exact same goal against Braden Holtby that he did back in the NHL All-Star match between the Metropolitan and Atlantic conferences a little more than a month ago in January.

For comparison, here are the two goals:

Yeah…our reaction would be like Holtby’s on that, but as a fan of the Bolts, it had us jumping out of our seat with both elation and laughter. It also helped ensure an important victory for Tampa Bay who has been in and out of mojo phases lately.

Brayden Point Continues to Impress

Although Kucherov’s goal may have been the more entertaining, Brayden Point bagged his 23rd goal of the season and 2nd on the night with an athletic romp around the Capitals defense. Point’s goal was quick, agile and intelligent requiring him to stay focused just long enough to sneak the puck into the goalie’s right.

Like their goal tallies, Point’s goal was the perfect complement to Kucherov’s commanding 1-on-1 fake.
