Midsize is “Just Right” For Kia Cars and SUVs

Kia Optima and Kia Sorento Value Leaders

Everyone knows the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. For those who may be a bit rusty, however, the story sees a young woman trespass into a home owned by three bears and try out each of their things before, as if under an annoying curse, always deciding that the third and final option is the perfect one. She is caught by the bears after sleeping and runs away.

For she, and not the bears, is the beastly monster of self-preservation and desire in this subversive tale. Her humanity returns, but only in its most grim and cynical state – worried that these bears will now turn the tables on her and eat her the way she has eaten their own portions. She leaves them to their ruined home. The damage has been done.

In each horrifying property violation, the one thing Goldilocks’s chosen food and sleeping accommodations have in common is that they’re “just right,” fitting perfectly between two more extreme options.

If Goldilocks had decided to add Grand Theft Auto to the list of crimes that she committed against the poor ursine family (not to mention the ongoing psychological trauma that follows home invasion), she probably would have wound up with a vehicle like the Kia Optima or Kia Sorento.

A Case for the Middle Ground

While Goldilocks is an inscrutable criminal and 100% the villain of the Three Bears’ story, she has tastes in both porridge and bedding that align with many people. Most drivers don’t want to feel that the things they own and use are “too” anything. Rather, having something that is versatile and in-between presents a “best of both worlds” approach. This is especially true for both cars and SUVs.

Midsize vehicles are the perfect upgrade from a small car or SUV, offering more room for passengers and often cargo while not quite hitting the price ranges of more expensive, family-focused third-row SUV or luxury sedan.

While SUVs are having quite the boom and every class within the SUV segment has been expanding (see the upcoming 2021 Kia Seltos), the sedan segment is becoming thinner with every passing generation’s end. Just this last year, Ford announced it would be discontinuing the Ford Fusion, a powerful contender in the midsize sedan segment.

What Does the Kia Optima Bring to the Table?

The Kia Optima is a powerful midsize sedan with a range of performance and trim-level options that don’t betray a lack of features in the entry levels.

In fact, the 2020 Kia Optima has several standard features from its base model up through its range-topping SX trim such as Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, Kia Drive Wise active safety features, comfortable 5-passenger seating and its debonair good looks.

Last year, we matched up the 2019 Kia Optima (from which the 2020 model carries many features forward) against midsize sedan competition. You can read that comparison by clicking here.

What Does the Kia Sorento Bring to the Table?

Like the Kia Optima, the Kia Sorento occupies a middle space between the compact Sportage SUV and the Earth-conquering Kia Telluride SUV. On the cusp of its next generation, the Kia Sorento still features many of the traits it possessed when it was Kia’s largest vehicle such as standard third-row seating, 5,000 lbs. of available towing capacity and a comfortable wheelbase.

While 2021 appears to be bringing significant changes to the platform and position of the Kia Sorento on the Kia lineup, the current 2020 model is the perfect opportunity to grab a vehicle that has the best of the smaller Sportage and the bigger Telluride on board.
