Kia KX5 U.S. Release Date and Availability
For us here in the United States, Kia offers a huge range of transportation options that is seemingly growing every year. Sure, we’re missing out on models like the Kia XCeed, Kia K3 and (most devastatingly) the Kia Optima Sportswagon. On the other hand, we’re one of the few markets to get models like the Kia Telluride.

One model of which we’re honestly a little envious, however, is the Chinese variant of the Kia Sportage. It’s simply called the Kia KX5.
Like the Chinese Kia Forte, the Kia KX5 is a joint venture between Kia and local automotive manufacturers in China. This partnership, known as Dongfeng Yueda Kia, brings local manufacturing and Kia’s product planning together to create something that isn’t available anywhere else in the world. We have to say…it looks pretty great.
Kia KX5 Vs. Kia Sportage
The most apparent deviation between the Chinese compact crossover and the Kia Sportage we all know and love is the design. The Kia KX5 features a grille and front end that appear to be a more natural evolution of the Kia Sportage’s third-generation.
Engine options are also another point of deviation between the two models. Where the U.S. Kia Sportage gets to choose between a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder that puts out 181 horsepower or a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine that provides a whopping 245 horsepower, the Kia KX5 has a choice between a turbocharged 1.6-liter, rated at 174 horsepower and a 2.0-liter rated at 162 horsepower.
Will the Kia KX5 Ever Be Available in the United States?
The Kia KX5 is a product of a partnership exclusive to the Chinese automotive market. We can say, with full confidence, that this version of the Kia Sportage will never be available in the North American market.
However, looking at the overall design of the Kia KX5 and how it compares to the upcoming Kia Seltos, both on the interior and exterior front, we think that the Kia KX5 may be the single best look into the Sportage’s next generation which is set to release for the 2022 model year.
