Will America Get the Kia Sonet?

Kia Debuts Kia Sonet Compact Crossover

A smart urban compact SUV has just joined the Kia Motors lineup, setting new expectations for the compact SUV class. Kia has finally debuted the Kia Sonet to the world after giving us a peek at it back in February. The Kia Sonet, built for the automotive market in India, is offering first-in-class features, youthful style, and dynamic design. Similar to what the Kia Seltos has brought to the American automotive market, the Sonet is offering capable engines and a performance that is built for all weather conditions.

The question on everyone’s mind, though, is if America will get the Kia Sonet. Find out what we think below and get a closer look at the upcoming Kia Sonet compact crossover.

Kia Sonet Specs and Design Details

Kia has been welcoming new vehicles to its lineups across the globe in 2020. The Kia Seltos and Kia K5 continue to be at the front of shoppers’ minds here in the U.S., thanks to their addition of brand-new features and design elements. For the market in India, the Kia Sonet is bringing in some of those key design features that we’ve seen here in the U.S.

The Sonet wears a new interpretation of the signature tiger-nose grille as well as “heart beat” DRLS, which we’ve seen on the new K5. The driver-centric interior the Sonet is bringing has been a consistent theme across new and updated Kia models, putting everything within reach for the driver.

The overall look of the Kia Sonet is strong and athletic. The Sonet sits on 16-inch crystal-cut alloy wheels and its sporty silhouette can be wrapped in one of eight monotone color options or one of three dual-tone exterior color combinations.

Three engine options are available for the Kia Sonet – two gasoline-powered engines and one diesel option. Shoppers can choose between the gasoline-powered Smartstream 1.2-liter four-cylinder engine and the 1.0 T-GDi engine, or the efficient 1.5-liter CRDi diesel engine. Five transmissions are available for the Sonet, with three manual options and two automatics.

Will the Kia Sonet Be Available in the United States?

We have to lean towards “no” on the availability of the Kia Sonet in the U.S. This compact SUV has been designed for the automotive market in India, and with the Seltos being so similar and already available here we don’t think there’s much space for the Sonet in the American Kia lineup.

If any additional information on the Kia Sonet becoming available in America is released, you can find it here on the Friendly Kia blog.
