Gasparilla 2018 Alternatives
Maybe parades aren’t your thing. Maybe the traffic and crowds are a little bit too much. Maybe you have a bad history with pirates (we hear you…). Whatever the reason, the 2018 Gasparilla Pirate Fest next weekend isn’t for everybody.
For those looking to enjoy Saturday the 27th, in an environment that is decidedly not swashbuckling, there are still some magnificent events happening in Pasco County, Tampa, St. Petersburg and the surrounding areas.
If you’re the kind of person who cheers for the British fleet in Pirates of the Caribbean, or is haunted by flashbacks from a certain pirate-themed football team which nobody can quite prove exists in Tampa, these events are for you:
Annual Kumquat Festival – Dade City, Florida
If the wild traffic south of New Port Richey is what you’re looking to avoid, heading East will lead you to a refreshing splash of citrusy serendipity.
Beginning at 9:00 AM and wrapping up at 5:00 PM, the Kumquat Festival in historic downtown Dade City gives you an all-day event that includes family-friendly entertainment, up to 425 vendors and, of course, a culinary deep dive into one of the more underrated citrus fruits ever to grow.
The event lineup includes arts and crafts, food from local restaurants and food trucks, live music, a farmer’s market, car show and more!
Best of all? The 2018 Kumquat Festival is free to attend!

Twilight Paddle – St. Petersburg, Florida
Looking to escape the crowds altogether? Get out in nature! The Boyd Hill Nature Preserve in St. Petersburg offers a sublime opportunity to see the sun go down over Lake Maggiore. Being able to see the sun set on the calm waters of the lake is basically the exact opposite of the raucous activities that will be taking place in neighboring Tampa for Gasparilla.
Directions to the Boyd Hill Nature Preserve can be found on the St. Petersburg Parks & Recreation website by clicking here.

International Holocaust Remembrance Day Concert – Tampa, FL
If you’re looking for something more sober and grounded than adults dressed like pirates carousing into the small hours of the morning, but don’t mind fighting a bit of Gasparilla traffic, Young Israel of Tampa is putting on a special concert of music – new and old.
This concert will feature the music of Francis Schwartz, a Sarasota-based composer. It will hold victims of the Holocaust in remembrance and offer solidarity against future persecution. The event is free, open to the public and features works by student and professional composers, alike, in a variety of musical styles.
For more information on the concert, visit the event page’s website by clicking here.
