2021 Kia Optima Becomes Kia K5
Since 2000 the Kia Optima has been a part of the Kia brand’s lineup. Now for 2021, the U.S. Kia market is dropping the Optima name and the 2021 Kia Optima is becoming the Kia K5. The K5 name has been around for a bit in the Korean market but this will be the first time the U.S. variant will wear the alphanumeric name. However, a new name isn’t the only thing the 2021 Kia K5 is bringing to the market. Let’s take a dive into the all-new 2021 Kia K5 below.

2021 Kia K5 Brings All-Wheel Drive
According to the Kia brand’s filing with the EPA, the 2021 Kia K5 not only is bringing its new name, but also all-wheel drive and a turbocharged 1.6-liter engine. With this setup beneath the hood, the K5 is set to deliver an estimated 26 mpg in the city, 34 mpg on the highway, and a combined 29 mpg.
Since the beginning the Kia Optima has been a favorite among brand-loyalists and we suspect that this name change will bring even more fans. The simplistic alphanumeric name wraps up the high-quality design and technology this vehicle brings. Backed by a pleasant driving experience, reliable fuel economy, and impressive power output, we suspect the K5 is here to stay for many more years to come.
Will Other Kia Models Get Name Changes?
The Korean Kia lineup is made up of multiple vehicles with alphanumeric names, while the U.S. lineup favors names like the Cadenza, Seltos, Telluride, and Rio. With the Optima trading its name in for K5, many may be wondering if other Kia models will get name changes as well. We at Friendly Kia don’t suspect that other Kia vehicles will get a name changes simply due to the addition of the Seltos and the debut of the 2021 Sorento not having an alphanumeric name. However, only time will tell if we gain more names like the K5 in the U.S. market.
