2020 Kia Sorento Specs, Design and Features Speculation
With Kia having released most of their 2020 models already, we’re left to speculate on the remainder of its lineup for next year. It just so happens that speculation is one of our favorite activities around these parts. Sometimes we’re right. Sometimes we’re wrong. Every time, we have fun and dive into the deep and alluring world of Kia’s engineering and design.

Today, we’re going to look at the Kia Sorento and do our best to predict the features and specs you can expect on Kia’s robust, family-haulin’, midsize crossover.
With the Sorento no longer carrying the mantle of largest SUV on the lineup, we think this will free the Sorento to do its own thing and that will likely lead to us meeting a model with a different flavor than the current Sorento (which was, for many years, forced to be both a comfortable mid-size crossover and a third-row SUV).
Here’s what we think you can expect on the next Sorento:
1. 2020 Kia Sorento Hybrid
Let’s start out with our boldest claim. We think that the next-generation Kia Sorento will be available with a hybrid motor. With fuel economy regulations seemingly tightening up the world over and models like the Toyota Highlander offering a hybrid-electric powertrain, we think Kia will follow suit and mate the existing 2.4-liter engine to a hybrid motor for fuel efficiency numbers that could break 35 highway miles per gallon.
We also wouldn’t be surprised to see a PHEV model that takes advantage of the buzz behind fully-electric cars to offer 20-30 miles of fully-electric range that come courtesy of an overnight charge.
2. 2020 Kia Sorento Style/Design
With the 2020 Kia Telluride, 2020 Kia Soul and 2019 Kia forte signaling the next generation of popular Kia models, we expect the next-generation Kia Sorento to follow suit with a fundamental rethinking of what it means to be the Sorento. Our opinion is that the 2020 Kia Sorento will have a decidedly-upscale look and feel that does as much to shake up the model as the 2019 Kia Forte did.
We imagine the next-generation Kia Telluride will feature a floating roofline, blacked-out C-Pillar and an even sportier grille and front fascia. Inside, the next-generation Sorento will be just as luxurious as the 2020 Kia Telluride, featuring refined styling, a floating standard 8-inch touchscreen display (that can be upgraded to a 10.25-inch model) and standard Kia Drive Wise active safety features.
3. 2020 Kia Sorento Seating and Passenger Space
The 2019 Kia Sorento wasn’t in an ideal place to show off its own personality. For many years, the Sorento was Kia’s largest SUV and the only vehicle families looking for more than five seats could get on the lineup that also had all-wheel drive.
For its next generation, we think Kia may downplay the Kia Sorento as a third-row crossover and instead focus on its competitive strengths as a midsize crossover that offers more legroom and cargo volume than the Sportage without the bulk of the 2020 Kia Telluride.
While we wouldn’t predict a full third-row delete, we think it will go from being a standard feature to an available one, with positioning for the Sorento matching it up against models like the Ford Edge, Chevrolet Blazer, Nissan Murano and Honda Passport rather than larger, third-row crossovers like the Ford Explorer, Chevrolet Traverse, Toyota Highlander and Nissan Pathfinder.
4. 2020 Kia Sorento Predictions Won’t Happen Until the 2021 Model Year
Without so much as an official announcement from Kia, we don’t really see the brand having enough time to hype up a fundamental reimagining before the SUV-heavy months of winter. For that reason, we expect the 2020 Kia Sorento to follow in the footsteps of the refreshed 2019 Kia Sorento, albeit with some features that may signal what is to come on the 2021 Kia Sorento.
We’d love to be wrong about this and the sooner we can meet the next Sorento, the better. It seems that with the Sorento having just received a facelift last year, however, that Kia is saving the all-new Sorento’s reveal for the auto show circuit in early 2020.
Ultimately, we don’t know, and we won’t until we hear anything from Kia or see anything from sneaky spy photographers online.
