2019 Kia Stinger IIHS Safety Rating
As a whole, buying a vehicle means compromising. We’d all love to have an all-wheel-drive, convertible sports SUV with 10,000 lbs. of towing capacity and 135 cubic feet of interior space that does 0-60 in 2.8 seconds and gets 50 miles per gallon. Since the whole idea behind automation is resisting the natural laws of physics, different vehicles serve different purposes and choosing a vehicle for the attributes you like also means taking reductions in its less-important facets.
For sports cars, the trade-offs you make for the horsepower, lighter weight and handling prowess are typically found in the form of a higher fuel consumption (a bigger engine burns more fuel), comfort (although this can be mitigated by a feature like Drive Mode Select) and often safety.
Kia Continues to Challenge the Status Quo
Safety is often a casualty of a focus on performance because safety features add weight and bulk to a vehicle that is attempting to be as light and aerodynamic as possible. It’s the reason performance bike enthusiasts chop off features like cushy seats and fender panels when they want to go really fast.
For Kia, however, trading safety for exhilaration was never an option on the table. While we’ve known for a while that the Kia Stinger is a sensible buy as well as an indulgent one (thanks to its 40.9 cubic feet of cargo volume and four-door setup), we can now relay its status as a safety leader with full confidence.
How Does the IIHS Rate the Kia Stinger?
We say this because the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) – a reputable organization that subjects vehicles to several crash and safety tests above and beyond those mandated by the United States Federal Government – has awarded the 2019 Kia Stinger with its coveted Top Safety Pick + distinction, the highest possible rating.
