Kia Optima Vs. Toyota Camry

Tracking the ebb and flow of manufacturers behind the most popular cars throughout our automotive history is an interesting endeavor. While most cars started out as American-sourced, the gas crisis in the late 1970s saw Americans turn on a dime from prioritizing lavish vehicles with large engines to small cars with excellent fuel efficiency.

Seemingly overnight, small German and Japanese cars became popular. Among them, the Toyota Camry became the instant torch-carrier for small, dependable vehicles with incredible value. Since then, it hasn’t slowed down much. Even its status as the butt of jokes about a lack of personality or distinguishing features in a car reveals a vehicle that is happy to just be a reliable and a safe option.

Has it been replaced? We think so. Here is why the Kia Optima is the new standard of dependable, safe and high-value midsize driving.

1. The 2019 Kia Optima Adds Style to the Mix

With its history on the road and historic reliability, there’s a good chance you see plenty of Toyota Camrys on the road. So, you should be able to form an image in your head of what they look like, right? It’s not so easy, is it?

For years, the Toyota Camry skated by on being a safe option. It was a joyless and uninspiring act to buy one that barely required tapping the decision-making portion of one’s brain. It was like ordering a cheeseburger and fries at McDonald’s.

The Kia Optima has taken the formula which made the Camry famous (Safety x Reliability x Low price) and added a third variable – style. The 2019 Kia Optima offers a compelling and composed style with a cab-rearward design that evokes a sports coupe. Its Euro-style grille is reminiscent of cars twice as expensive.

On the inside, the stretched dashboard and composed interior are stately and memorable, never losing themselves in overdesign.

2. The 2019 Kia Optima Gives You More Options

Both the 2019 Kia Optima and the 2019 Toyota Camry feature hybrid variants, but only the 2019 Kia Optima also gives you three engine options to choose from. The 2019 Toyota Camry provides two, the higher of which is a gas-guzzling V6. Rather than focus on adding cylinders, the 2019 Kia Optima offers fuel efficiency and packaging courtesy of its available turbocharged engine.

Similarly, while the Camry only gives you one transmission option, the 2019 Kia Optima has two.

3. The 2019 Kia Optima is More Reliable

“Blasphemy,” you say. “How dare one question the iconic reliability of the Toyota Camry?”

We’ve discussed Kia’s radical transformation over the past decade and even poked fun at how disruptive their vehicles and value are to the automotive status quo through our Notes from the Rebellion series. It’s true, though. Kia have become giant-killers.

Dependability is an area where the brand shines. This past year, Kia became the most-awarded brand for J.D. Power’s Initial Quality Study. Their ongoing dependability study also saw them take home a top spot. Finally, Kia backs their vehicles twice as long as Toyota – giving you an additional 2 years/24,000 miles of bumper-to-bumper coverage and an extra 5 years/40,000 miles of engine/powertrain coverage.

In the words of Malcolm in the Middle’s Dewey: “The future is now, old man.”

4. The 2019 Kia Optima is a Bastion of Value

The initial appeal of vehicles like the Toyota Camry was value. Drivers realized they could have a competent vehicle at 2/3 of the price of a comparable domestic model. Although these vehicles lacked the flourish and style of their American counterparts, the market proved that this was a sacrifice many were willing to make.

The 2019 Kia Optima offers more value than the 2019 Toyota Camry by letting drivers have comparable (and often superior) technology, a range of performance options and a car they can count on for a decade for less money.

Even at MSRP, the 2019 Kia Optima’s entry-level model undercuts the 2019 Toyota Camry’s by nearly $1,000. With the type of savings that are typical at Friendly Kia, you’ll save even more.
